Cannot sign in to Google with Brave browser

Realizing and identifying the issue

Recently, I've noticed that I couldn't log in to my Google account on the Brave browser when I wanted to upload some photos to Blogger or when I wanted to write a comment on someone's blog.

On my other browsers, my Google account is already logged in for doing the same thing, so there's no need to sign in. I guess this issue is specific to the Brave browser only.

The cause and its solution

I did some searching online and found out about Brave's cookie settings. I don't remember what led me to read about this.

In its default configuration, Brave is configured to block third-party cookies.

As far as I know, Google owns Blogger, so why does this particular setting still block Google?

I asked ChatGPT, and it said this:

While Google is the primary service provider for Blogger, the login mechanism may utilize cookies that are considered third-party if they are being accessed from a different domain or service. Therefore, in this context, if you are unable to log in due to your cookie settings, it could be seen as Google’s authentication process being treated as a third-party service.

I changed the cookies setting to 'Allow all cookies' and this issue was solved.

How to Solve Sign-In failure on the Brave Browser

Navigate to Brave settings by clicking the 3 lines burger menu at the top right and click on Settings near the bottom of the list.

Go to Shields section, search for 'Block cookies' and set it to 'Allow all cookies'.

Alternatively, if you prefer to allow cookies only on a specific site, use this method:

  1. Go to the site you're having the trouble with.
  2. Click the Brave Shields icon next to the address bar.
  3. Near the bottom of the shields, choose 'Allow all cookies'.

Besides this setting, you might want to check your browser extensions, as some may block cookies or interfere with logins. Try disabling them to see if that resolves the issue.
