What do Windows reset, reformat, and reinstall do
In the context of Windows operating systems, "reset," "reformat," and "reinstall" refer to different processes for restoring or refreshing the system.
- Windows Reset: This option allows you to reset your Windows installation to its original state. You can choose to keep your personal files or remove everything.
- Reformat: Reformatting refers to the process of erasing all data on a storage drive (like a hard drive or SSD) and preparing it for a new file system.
- Reinstall: Reinstalling Windows involves installing the operating system again, either over the existing installation or after reformatting the drive.
Reformatting and reinstalling Windows often occur together, especially during a clean installation of the operating system.
Preparation before Windows Reset/Reinstall
If you are able to access the computer normally before the process of reset or reinstall, these are things you should do:
1. Backup personal files
These are the important files and folders that are in the same drive as Windows (usually drive C:). These files are the ones that you store inside the default location. Refer to the picture below. Move these files to a separate drive or disk.
2. Backup browser's saved passwords
Most modern browsers offer an option to export saved passwords to a file, usually in .csv format. Export this file and save it to a separate drive or disk, just like in the first step. If you choose to store it in your online storage, make sure to delete it after restoring your passwords.
Open your browser settings and search for "password manager".

3. Backup browser bookmarks
Similar to step 2, export your bookmarks and save them to a separate drive or disk. Open your browser settings and search for "bookmark manager." The bookmarks will typically be saved as an .html file.
4. Take note of installed apps and drivers
These are the apps that you installed in their default install location which is usually the same as Windows that will be wiped (drive C:). Make a list of the important apps that you will need to reinstall.
5. Keep a record of license keys
If there are apps that you bought, check the specific application’s documentation for any options to export or save your registration information. Some applications may offer a way to back up your settings or licenses.
